IMPORTANT INFORMATION
SUBMITTING SAMPLES FOR EXPORT FLUKE TESTING
TO ENABLE ANIMALS TO ENTER WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Updated for changes to horse testing requirements - December, 2025.
- ParaSite Diagnostic Services Laboratory is accredited for testing to confirm the absence of liver fluke eggs in faecal samples.
This test, called an Egg Sedimentation Test (EST), is required for all livestock moving into Western Australia.
- Collecting samples and coordinating testing results needs to be thought through carefully. You need to submit samples so that testing can be performed before the horses are sent to WA, but also less than 14 days before entry. We strongly recommend you use Express Post.
- For livestock other than horses: our lab needs a minimum of 10 grams of fresh faeces (~ larger than a golf ball) for each animal.
- For horses (changed December, 2025): WA authorities now require two tests per animal. As a result, our lab needs two faecal samples of at least 10 grams each (both ~ larger than a golf ball) from each animal - either taken from different pieces of faeces, or different sides of the same large clump of faeces. You must send these as two individual samples in separate containers/bags, clearly labelled with the same ID, and sent to us in the same mail satchel. Please do not send a single sample, as we need to confirm the material was sampled from different sections of faeces. The price for horse export fluke testing has been increased to cover the double testing now required - see our price page for more information.
- We recommended you collect at least twice the amount of faecal material, keeping some aside so you don't need to re-take the samples if they are misplaced.
Submission forms and essential information
- Use our standard submission form for the relevant animal type. Check the export fluke box.
- It is essential you provide accurate animal identification, date of faeces collection, owner / exporter name. This will ensure the border authorities can match our certificate to the relevant animal.
- The date that the animals are being sent is also handy information.
- Please notify our laboratory the samples are on their way.
- This is best done using email or the “contact us” section of the web site.
- We always recommend you send the samples using Express Post.
- Allow three days processing time in the laboratory.
- If you require results urgently, we will charge an express processing fee up to $25 per sample.
For up to 30 samples requiring the liver fluke sedimentation test:
- These fluke tests need to be booked in, preferably the week prior.
- This is best done using email or the “contact us” section of the web site.
- We always recommend you send the samples using Express Post.
- Allow at least three days processing time from when the lab receives the samples.
- It takes around 15 minutes to process each sample. 30 samples takes significant lab time.
- If you require results urgently, we will charge an express processing fee. See our pricing page for more information.
For more than 30 samples requiring the liver fluke sedimentation test:
- This sample loading must definitely be pre-arranged with the lab, well in advance.
- Failure to notify the lab could result in your samples not being processed in time to meet your transport commitments to WA.
- Allow at least three days for the first 30 samples and at least one day extra for each further group of 30 samples.
- Testing time may reduce, given enough prior notification.
- The lab can not guarantee an express service for accessions greater than 30 samples, if no prior notice is received. However, if we have lab time, we will perform the EST at express dollar rate.
