Tests Collecting Samples

How to Collect Samples

Worm Test

Collection/Mailing of samples: For cattle / deer / goats etc.: Collect 10 fresh dung samples.

For sheep: Put mob in corner, leave 5 minutes. Move animals away. Collect 10 fresh dung samples.

Please place no more than one teaspoonful of dung in each small bag. Please seal all the bags and the pack carefully.

If sending more than one group, up to 5 mobs may be entered on the form. Postage/ freight costs will be minimised if all samples are sent in one parcel. Fit as many samples in the envelope as possible, or tape or tie envelopes securely together, leaving one address label clearly visible. Thanks!

(Suggest that you do not mail them on Fridays.)

Fluke Test

(Can be also be done from the same samples sent for a Check-Worm test.)

Drench Resistance Test

The youngest sheep on the property should be used and a bulk worm egg count done first to ensure that there are a minimum of 300 worm eggs per gram of dung (epg) present. Collect the samples for this test as for a Worm-Check Test.

After 10-12 days, samples are then collected directly from the animals, rather than from the ground, to avoid contamination with the hundreds of microscopic worm eggs already lying there, which would give an inaccurate result. Ten samples are collected from each group of 15 sheep - allowing for the possibility that the rectums of some sheep may be empty!

(Suggest that you do not mail them on Fridays.)

Algae Test

Collect samples of algal scum from the water surface. Suggest that you wear plastic gloves for the collection, to avoid skin contact with algae, some species of which may possibly induce skin irritation.

As algal samples can rapidly deteriorate - post samples on same day of collection.

(Suggest that you do not mail them on Fridays.)

Please seal the containers tightly, wind the cotton wool round the outside of each tube and close the pack carefully. Thanks!
